A glimpse inside
Adam, a shy hafiz in Detroit, longs to lead taraweeh but watches his friend Jamal praised as the imam’s likely choice. Stung by teasing and jealousy, Adam shares a private practice video of Jamal stumbling in Qur’an, and the clip spreads through their youth group. Jamal, humiliated, steps down from leading, and the imam turns to Adam instead. As Adam leads the first nights of Ramadan, praise from the community clashes with the guilt of knowing he sabotaged his friend. When Jamal begins praying at home to escape the mockery, Adam can’t shake the empty space he’s left in the masjid. On the third night, with the hall full and everyone expecting him to lead, Adam stops and publicly admits he was the one who shared the video and made the first joke. He steps back from the imam’s spot and asks Jamal’s forgiveness in front of everyone. After a long pause, Jamal walks to the front, takes the mic, and begins to lead again. Adam stays in the first row, quietly feeding him a word only when needed, choosing to stand behind his friend rather than in front.
