A glimpse inside
In a small flat near the big mosque in East London, Mum opens the oven on a tray of glistening basbousa and tells Amina it is an amanah, a trust, for their Eid guests. When a hungry delivery driver arrives just before iftar, Amina quietly gives him the entire dessert, hoping for Allah’s pleasure but leaving the family with nothing sweet for their guests. As the call to prayer echoes and the missing basbousa is discovered, Amina struggles between keeping her treasured Eid sweets and sharing them to fix what she has done, finally opening her tin and even giving away her favourite purple sweet.
